Mötley Crüe were one of the biggest bands of the 1980s, and were slightly older than Guns N’ Roses who had emerged onto the international scene a couple of years earlier.  ‘Dr. Feelgood’, taken from the album of the same name, has a funky ascending riff played by guitarist Mick Mars with great dexterity.

The third single from the singer’s 1982 studio album Thriller, ‘Beat It’ entranced listeners with its synthesized intro and hypnotic beat.  But it was Eddie Van Halen’s guest guitar solo, delivered on the song’s mid-section, which helped it to sell in enormous quantities to all audiences even decades after its initial release.

When Iron Maiden emerged from the so-called ‘New Wave Of British Heavy Metal’ in 1980, high-profile stadium tours awaited them.  The wailing opening riff of ‘Run To The Hills’ leads onto a tale of white conquistadores invading America.

Beginning with guitarist Alex Lifeson’s scintillating barrage of notes, and yet as a whole relatively uncomplicated in riffs and arrangement, ‘The Spirit Of Radio’ is an absolutely magnificent song. Though atypical of Rush’s usual sound, it was a vast hit and this anthemic masterpiece has come to define them in the world of rock.

One of Iron Maiden’s ultimate classics, ‘The Trooper’ is an intense ride. The snaky riff that begins the song is not for the faint-hearted but is immediately recognizable to Maiden’s legions of fans. It doesn’t end there – later in the song a stop-start riff has audiences on the edges of their seats for the full duration.

The irresistible opening riff to ‘Start Me Up’ sets up a track which can be heralded as a thumping rock anthem. Brash and unapologetic, the song made it clear that the 1980s would be the decade in which the Stones found their maximum audience – as indeed history proved!

By the 1980s Van Halen were recording hit after hit! The riff that opens ‘Panama’ is a delayed figure of sheer beauty, as is the entire midsection, over which Eddie Van Halen solos with his usual inventive brilliance and melodic awareness. A song about a car, Eddie’s Lamborghini can even be heard revving its engine halfway through – pure genius!

One of Slayer’s most popular songs, ‘Raining Blood’ is almost too intense to describe in words, let alone listen to at anything approaching high volume. The song’s best-known riff is the descending line that begins the song, but the mesmerizingly brutal riff that precedes the vocals is also an all-time classic. The added thunderstorm effects make this an astounding composition.

‘Master of Puppets’ comes from one of the most accomplished thrash metal albums ever recorded. This complex song contains several classic metal guitar patterns – the second and third riffs are both spidery affairs played with millimetrically precise down strokes by rhythm guitar genius James Hetfield. The fact that Hetfield recorded this song at the tender age of 22 still beggars belief!

This classic track gave Texan trio ZZ Top their first true taste of international success. With Billy GIbbons on lead guitar, his legendary solo riff provided a deep rocky sound to perfectly complement the solid bass and drums of bandmates Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. Throw in a hooky chorus and the infamous beards sported by Gibbons and Hill, and it’s no wonder that this song became one of ZZ Top’s chart toppers.
