A more ‘cheerful’ alternative to previous metal music, the release of the Permission to Land album by The Darkness could not have been better timed. In ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ the band flawlessly combined solid rock influences with a sense of humour and slinky catsuits. With an opening riff which begins as a whisper and explodes into an energetic and invigorating beast of a tune, this song gave glam metal a whole new name.

Rock doesn’t sound much better than the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures.  With a line up reading like The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) produced some of the most adept riffs ever written.  ‘Mind Eraser, No Chaser’ was the second single taken from their debut self titled album.

A rock phenomenon that achieved their first real international success as a band at the beginning of the noughties. Their second and third albums, Rated R and Songs For The Deaf, established them as real contenders in the music scene at this time.  ‘No One Knows’ was taken from their third album, and features an amalgamation of artists.  Written by band members Josh Homme, of defunct rock band Kyuss, and Mark Lanegan, of Screaming Trees, the song’s razor-sharp riff was punctuated with harmonics and slides, making it a fierce rock tune!

As the new millennium settled in, ex-Guns N’Roses members Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan joined forces with ex-Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland and rock group Velvet Revolver were born!.  Their first single ‘Slither’ is an excellent moshpit anthem, kicked off by a long, ominous intro, followed by a Zeppelin-style riff, it remains their best-known song. It is fair to say that Velvet Revolver exploded onto the rock scene with an aggressive attitude and immense amounts of panache!

‘Motorcycle Emptiness’ is a real anthem for a generation of Manic Street Preachers’ fans.  A curious combination of torch song and most-pit classic, it continues to pluck at fans’ heartstrings with singer and guitarist James Dean Bradfield’s soaring tone. Made even more touching by the fact it stands as an epitaph to the band’s second guitarist Richey Edwards, who went missing in 1995.

This track was based on a full-pelt, distorted guitar riff which combined early 90’s grunge patterns with Young’s iconic vocal line. The lyrics of this song questioned how artists should react to changing tastes in music, and had the effect of revitalizing Young’s career, leading him to collaborate with punk pioneers Devo alongside his classic style. An extract from the song, “It’s better to burn out than to fade away”, was famously quoted in Kurt Cobain’s suicide note.

The third single from the singer’s 1982 studio album Thriller, ‘Beat It’ entranced listeners with its synthesized intro and hypnotic beat.  But it was Eddie Van Halen’s guest guitar solo, delivered on the song’s mid-section, which helped it to sell in enormous quantities to all audiences even decades after its initial release.

‘Born To Be Wild’ is one of those songs synonymous with the heavy metal era of the 1960s music scene.  Anchored by the pounding riff, the song was made popular by its appearance in the classic 1969 film Easy Rider; the title and the melody are still connected to the public’s perception of motorbike culture.

Beginning with guitarist Alex Lifeson’s scintillating barrage of notes, and yet as a whole relatively uncomplicated in riffs and arrangement, ‘The Spirit Of Radio’ is an absolutely magnificent song. Though atypical of Rush’s usual sound, it was a vast hit and this anthemic masterpiece has come to define them in the world of rock.

Known for its stunning opening riff and mesmerising dual guitar harmonies by Scott Graham and Brian Robertson, ‘The Boys are Back in Town’ is Thin Lizzy’s most popular hit. With lyrics telling of laddish behaviour, the song perfectly captures the band’s ‘party hard and reap the rewards’ attitude to life. Interestingly, the song is now played at most Irish rugby matches as the team run onto the pitch.
