‘Purple Haze’ set the rock scene on fire, thanks to Hendrix’s marvellous guitar manipulation. Central to the all-round amazingness of ‘Purple Haze’ is a chord made so famous by Jimi that pundits even refer to it as ‘the Hendrix chord’ to this day. Many musicians have covered the song but Hendrix’s original version will always be sensational.

Rocking as it is, the riff forming the backbone of ‘Cochise’ is not a new one; instead it pays homage to Led Zeppelin, with a touch of Deep Purple thrown in for good measure. The outcome is an impressive introduction to a great song, complete with distorted notes played through a whammy pedal. Written by Tom Morello, the lyrics of this mighty song tell of an 18th century American Indian chief who waged war on the invading white man.

Avenged Sevenfold are an American heavy metal band who were formed in 1999, and have gone on to have five studio albums.  Although pitched as producing a tough, metal sound, Avenged Sevenfold draw a huge amount of adoring, teenage audiences, something sneered upon by the wider heavy metal community.  ‘Beat And The Harlot’ with its core riff of fast tremolo picking with power chords, will test the picking hand of any metal guitar student!

As the new millennium settled in, ex-Guns N’Roses members Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan joined forces with ex-Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland and rock group Velvet Revolver were born!.  Their first single ‘Slither’ is an excellent moshpit anthem, kicked off by a long, ominous intro, followed by a Zeppelin-style riff, it remains their best-known song. It is fair to say that Velvet Revolver exploded onto the rock scene with an aggressive attitude and immense amounts of panache!

Mötley Crüe were one of the biggest bands of the 1980s, and were slightly older than Guns N’ Roses who had emerged onto the international scene a couple of years earlier.  ‘Dr. Feelgood’, taken from the album of the same name, has a funky ascending riff played by guitarist Mick Mars with great dexterity.

‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ was rapidly established as an anthem for a generation of disaffected kids for whom the hippie dream was fading fast. With a grinding riff laden with walls of primitive distortion, the song is at once grimly nihilistic and hilarious, combining Iggy Pop’s laconic vocals and the histrionics of the rest of the band.

‘Born To Be Wild’ is one of those songs synonymous with the heavy metal era of the 1960s music scene.  Anchored by the pounding riff, the song was made popular by its appearance in the classic 1969 film Easy Rider; the title and the melody are still connected to the public’s perception of motorbike culture.

When Iron Maiden emerged from the so-called ‘New Wave Of British Heavy Metal’ in 1980, high-profile stadium tours awaited them.  The wailing opening riff of ‘Run To The Hills’ leads onto a tale of white conquistadores invading America.

With the release of this track in response to the Waco massacre of the previous year, Machine Head redefined mainstream heavy metal. A combination of down-stroked, down-tuned power chords and pinch harmonics, this track features multiple heavyweight riffs. The highlight comes after three and a half minutes when the minute long outro riff begins; its simple notes, together with the band’s astounding triple-picking and palm-muting techniques have secured ‘Davidian’ a place in riff history.

‘Symphony of Destruction’ is one of Megadeth’s slicker, more mainstream creations. The opening riff of the big hit is a simple, crunching figure that focuses on bandleader Dave Mustaine’s expert down strokes and bassist David Ellefson’s machine-like unison playing. The song even begins with a snatch of Mozart, just to show the world that metal musicians are cultured too!
