Avenged Sevenfold are an American heavy metal band who were formed in 1999, and have gone on to have five studio albums.  Although pitched as producing a tough, metal sound, Avenged Sevenfold draw a huge amount of adoring, teenage audiences, something sneered upon by the wider heavy metal community.  ‘Beat And The Harlot’ with its core riff of fast tremolo picking with power chords, will test the picking hand of any metal guitar student!

One of the best killer riffs (no pun intended!) to emerge from the early noughties, ‘Mr Brightside’ begins in a high-register riff before being joined by a thumping, descending bass part.  A hit in many countries around the world when it was first released in May 2004, thanks to that catchy riff, it was hard to avoid. The Killers have achieved that effortlessly cool sound that many bands, both American and British have since tried to emulate.

A rock phenomenon that achieved their first real international success as a band at the beginning of the noughties. Their second and third albums, Rated R and Songs For The Deaf, established them as real contenders in the music scene at this time.  ‘No One Knows’ was taken from their third album, and features an amalgamation of artists.  Written by band members Josh Homme, of defunct rock band Kyuss, and Mark Lanegan, of Screaming Trees, the song’s razor-sharp riff was punctuated with harmonics and slides, making it a fierce rock tune!

As the new millennium settled in, ex-Guns N’Roses members Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan joined forces with ex-Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland and rock group Velvet Revolver were born!.  Their first single ‘Slither’ is an excellent moshpit anthem, kicked off by a long, ominous intro, followed by a Zeppelin-style riff, it remains their best-known song. It is fair to say that Velvet Revolver exploded onto the rock scene with an aggressive attitude and immense amounts of panache!

A song of almost psychedelic proportions, ‘I’m Free’ was taken from The Who’s fourth album Tommy, written mostly by guitarist Pete Townshend .  Released in July 1969 with B-side ‘Tommy Can You Hear Me’, ‘I’m Free’ is a slick operation of songwriting and guitar riffs.  Opening with a riff that will test any budding guitarist’s chord skills, it remains one of The Who’s best laid backed songs!

‘Motorcycle Emptiness’ is a real anthem for a generation of Manic Street Preachers’ fans.  A curious combination of torch song and most-pit classic, it continues to pluck at fans’ heartstrings with singer and guitarist James Dean Bradfield’s soaring tone. Made even more touching by the fact it stands as an epitaph to the band’s second guitarist Richey Edwards, who went missing in 1995.

One of Queen’s heavier songs, ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ was the second single to be taken from their 1976 album A Day at the Races.  A series of guitar layers, and a rock’n’roll boogie riff sustain the song’s duration.

Mötley Crüe were one of the biggest bands of the 1980s, and were slightly older than Guns N’ Roses who had emerged onto the international scene a couple of years earlier.  ‘Dr. Feelgood’, taken from the album of the same name, has a funky ascending riff played by guitarist Mick Mars with great dexterity.

Kids in the 1960s loved to rock out to garage rock, the type of music played by those who didn’t have decent equipment.  The Sonics epitomized this sound with the Richard Berry-penned tune ‘Have Love, Will Travel’.  The unforgettable riff, with a level of raucous overdrive applied to the guitar tone, was not a common sound when first released.

‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ was rapidly established as an anthem for a generation of disaffected kids for whom the hippie dream was fading fast. With a grinding riff laden with walls of primitive distortion, the song is at once grimly nihilistic and hilarious, combining Iggy Pop’s laconic vocals and the histrionics of the rest of the band.
