‘American Woman’ is based on a riff characteristic of 1970s groove-rock. Although the lyrics of the song were largely interpreted as being chauvinistic and an anti-American statement about the country’s role in the Vietnam war, the band themselves denied such claims and said they were influenced by the urban deprivation they saw whilst touring the country.

There are many ways to interpret a song and how the listener interprets could very well be drastically different than what the writers/singers themselves had in mind. With that being said, I don’t particularly see anything anti-American about this song.
Thanks for commenting. All good art exists as a mediation between the creator and the listener/viewer and can’t survive without an audience, critical or otherwise. Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA’ has been much misunderstood as a gung-ho clarion call for patriotism, rather than the ironic commentary intended by the man himself. American Woman, whatever its intentions is certainly a product of its times.
